War Thunder — Steam (store.steampowered.com)

War Thunder is a vehicle combat game spanning tanks, planes, and ships across multiple nations and eras, with three difficulty modes — Arcade, Realistic, and Simulator — that fundamentally change how forgiving the flight and driving physics feel. Progress is driven by research points spent on a per-nation tech tree, and by silver lions used to actually purchase and upgrade vehicles once researched. Because research and currency are functionally nation-specific, spreading progress across too many nations early is the single biggest thing slowing new players down.

Pick One Nation, One Vehicle Type, First

  • Choose one nation and one vehicle type (tanks or planes) to focus on before touching a second. Trying to progress multiple nations and vehicle types simultaneously multiplies the resources needed to feel competitive in any of them.
  • Base the pick on playstyle, not tier-list hearsay: agile, fast tanks versus heavy armor; nimble fighters versus heavy bombers. The "best" nation is the one whose playstyle you'll actually enjoy grinding for dozens of hours.
  • Play Arcade mode initially if you're new to the genre. It's more forgiving and lets you learn map layouts and vehicle matchups without the added complexity of Simulator-level flight and armor mechanics.

Modifications Before New Vehicles, Always

This is the mistake that costs new players the most silver lions: rushing up the tech tree and buying each new vehicle the moment it's affordable, without upgrading modifications on the current one first.

  • Fully research modifications on your current tank or plane before moving to the next tier. An under-modified vehicle at a higher tier frequently performs worse in a match than a fully upgraded one a tier below it.
  • Prioritize survivability and mobility modifications early (armor upgrades, engine improvements) over pure firepower mods — staying alive longer generates more research points per match than raw damage does.
  • Use in-game stat comparisons before buying a new vehicle. Some tech tree branches are dead ends for a given playstyle, and a quick stat check avoids wasting research points on a vehicle you'll barely use.

Match Awareness Matters as Much as Vehicle Tier

New players often assume tier alone decides outcomes. It doesn't. Positioning, spotting, and terrain use matter enormously, especially against better-equipped opponents.

  • Learn a handful of maps well before worrying about vehicle tier. Knowing sightlines, chokepoints, and flanking routes on a map you've played ten times will beat a marginally better vehicle on unfamiliar terrain.
  • Play defensively in unfamiliar matchups. Losing a fully modified vehicle in a reckless push costs more progress than playing a cautious match and surviving to capture points or call in support.

What To Do First

  1. Choose one nation to start with, based on playstyle preference, and stick with it through your first several tech tree tiers.
  2. Fully upgrade modifications on your starting vehicles before researching the next tier.
  3. Play a mix of Arcade matches early specifically to learn maps and general tactics, not just to grind research.
  4. Check stat comparisons before every vehicle purchase to avoid tech-tree dead ends that don't fit your playstyle.

War Thunder rewards mastering a smaller vehicle pool over rushing tiers. Modify what you have, learn the maps, and expand your tech tree deliberately rather than chasing the next unlock.
